And there was light

This morning we try to get up even earlier than usual, around 4am. The preparation is efficient; by 4:45am we’re already on the trail. Bad luck — after just a few dozen metres, I take the wrong path and lead us onto the ridge route instead of the quiet valley path. However, we make our way calmly past the bare stone peaks, crossing paths with some rather sleepy cattle.

Four hours later, we arrive at the Onda refuge, the intermediate point of the day, having enjoyed a magnificent sunrise.

The Englishman’s waterfall

After a short break, we tackle the main climb of the day, on the foothills of Monte d’Oru. The ascent is as pleasant as the descent is long and monotonous. Near the end of the stage, in a moment of inattention, I fall on a smooth stone slab and break one of my hiking poles. We finish exhausted, happy to have reached this midpoint of our crossing.

Camping

The bivouac is lively; we meet many acquaintances and have a drink. Of the people who left Ortu with us, there aren’t many left now. By chance, a hiker gives me one of his poles, after having bought a new pair. William’s feet are in a sorry state, but no matter — we’re determined to see this journey through!
