Reaching Cahors

Under a grey sky and at just 20°C, we arrive on Thursday, August 15, 2024 at the small Cahors train station. About 3h30 by train separates the capital of the Lot valley from Bordeaux and we are quite glad to leave the old, dusty Intercités that valiantly brought us here. However, we still need a good hour to reach Vers, the starting point of this summer hike. A kind-hearted driver gives us a lift, as buses don’t run on public holidays.

Eyes on the Causse

After a breakfast prepared the night before, we start the day’s little climb, namely the ascent of a causse, a limestone plateau a few hundred meters high, which gives its name to the natural park. Mossy trees and scorched grass — that’s the sight awaiting us once the difficulty is behind us. Crossing the plateau is easy and pleasant.

We finally descend to Cabrerets, a pretty little village with medieval vibes, where we’ll spend the night. The municipal campsite is well-filled but not full; we’re given a prime spot by the Célé river, which will allow us to spend a cool night.

Tomorrow, a big stage awaits us, dotted with beautiful discoveries, the highlight of which will be our arrival at Saint-Cirq-Lapopie.
